Comments about Collecting Criteria
for the St’Art 2006, organized by ESGAA (European Studio Glass
Association).
In my experience there tend to be three major tendencies in collecting.
First, and happily foremost, is that of the impassioned private
collector. This is the pioneer and risk-taker, putting his or her
money where the heart lies. Such people buy what they like because
they are personally moved by what they see. They buy for the sheer
love of the thing. As with any developing and ongoing path, this
practitioner is also on a learning curve. It isn’t a matter
of criteria, so much as an evolving vision of the art and its possibilities.
Growing, progressing, changing, the collector moves deeper into
his subject. Yesterday’s treasures may remain so forever,
they may also wind up on the trash heap. This is as it should be.
The process of education inevitably raises the bar, and the discernment

to as hobbies. Occasionally they are a way of life, a career, a
life's work. Read More...

The Heart of Glass
For “Circus of Spheres” for the Venini part of the catalogue,
text by Roberto Gasparotto 2004.
I was struck by the mysterious plasticity and the clean lines of
the works of Monica and Philip from the very first time I saw them
in Frankfurt in 1994. A mixture of Nordic severity and Mediterranean
colour, it was difficult to define which tradition the works actually
belonged to, for they seemed to bring together the rational characteristics
of the Scandinavian tradition and the superb craftsmanship of the
Master glass-blowers in Murano. Read
